Work

One page for each piece of work, and a room for the stories.

  1. Modernizing the enterprise container platform Medavie Inc. · 2025–2026

Moving Medavie Inc.'s containers off a capacity- and licence-constrained Mirantis platform onto VMware vSphere Kubernetes Service, instead of growing the old platform or borrowing capacity from non-production.

  2. Consolidation as an operating-model change Medavie Inc. · 2026–now

Shifting infrastructure planning from like-for-like refreshes to shared enterprise platforms, with each consolidation gated on capacity and licensing, and its cost made visible to the business that uses it.

  3. Building the Drill Routine Simulator to last drillteamroutine.com · 2026

A browser simulator for Canadian Armed Forces drill: the engine rewritten before the backlog, a feature removed because it was wrong at the premise, a cloud design simplified before anything was deployed, and two incidents that each became a rule.

  4. Automating Oracle database lifecycle operations Two public repositories · 2022–2024

Codifying how an Oracle database is patched and installed, not just the commands: the change ticket, the checks, the downtime, the patch and the notifications, as separate Ansible pieces.

  5. Short Stories 13 stories

Short fiction — war, airships, a facility that keeps failing over, and a few things in between.

A letter

Matthew Dodd and a companion smiling in a selfie on the summit of Huayna Picchu, high above the terraces of Machu Picchu
On Huayna Picchu, above Machu Picchu.

I started in 2010 as a SigOp, not really knowing what that meant except that computers were used. For me, that really meant keeping communications systems running for the people who depended on them. Keeping things running even when they don't seem to want to is still my biggest skill.

Since then I have looked after Oracle and PostgreSQL estates for the federal government and for Sun Life, managed virtualization across private industries, and developed a couple of small tools at home and online that I think are neat. Today I lead enterprise infrastructure and platforms at Medavie: compute, virtualization, Kubernetes, storage and backup, in an environment where reliability is not optional.

My degrees are in history: a B.A., then an M.A. in Digital Humanities at Carleton University, where I wrote The Empire of the Old Bailey Online: Why Zero Matters.

I also write fiction, about topics that I think interest me or where a short idea has popped into my head. None of my short stories are designed to be entire stories from start to finish, rather they are written kind of like chapters from a book where the rest of the pages are all missing. Most of them come from my own experiences or things I observed in the real world that seem to come from another time and place. Thirteen of the stories are in the bay above. I also built and maintain drillteamroutine.com, a simulator for Canadian Armed Forces drill routines.
